WHAT IS COYO?
COYO is a yoghurt alternative made out of, you guessed it, coconuts! COYO describe it as “Heaven in a mouthful” and it’s advertised as being free from dairy, gluten, soy, lactose, refined sugar, making it suitable for vegans, sugar-avoiders and pretty much anyone with any sort of intolerance! We thought all this all seemed too good to be true (except, perhaps, the price tag!), so we put it to the test!

COYO is made from the squeezed flesh of organically grown coconuts. Plant fed vegan cultures are added to this, making a probiotic – which is great for digestive health. The ingredients list is super clean – nothing artificial, no colourings, no preservatives!
HOW DOES IT COMPARE?
When you compare it to the nutritional profile of a dairy based yoghurt, it is very different – COYO contains little calcium, is low in protein and has more than double the amount of fat, so it’s important to not assume these products are completely interchangeable. Despite this, the fats within COYO are plant based saturated fats – the heart healthy fats our bodies love for keeping us full and giving us energy. COYO is also free from refined sugars and additives with it’s sweetness coming from natural sources – unlike many traditional dairy based yoghurts which are often full of sugars and artificial sweeteners.
When it comes to texture COYO have really got it spot on – it’s thick, creamy and silky all at the same time. They describe it as “heaven in a mouthful” and we couldn’t agree more – the COYO texture is a dream.
Natural : The natural yoghurt had a lovely subtle coconut flavour that was not overpowering at all – it was the perfect base to mix with granola and fresh fruit.
Plum & Guava : The plum and guava flavour, however, was less impressive on our taste buds. The fruit puree was mainly concentrated on the bottom and it was really tricky to mix it in, leaving us with a very unevenly flavoured yoghurt!
VERDICT : #NAILEDIT OR #FAILED IT?
We fell in love with the creamy, velvety texture of COYO and really recommend it if you are vegan or are intolerant to dairy – we haven’t tried such a creamy dairy free product! We will definitely be buying the natural yoghurt to mix with our granola! Not too often though – it is a little expensive, so we’ll save it for a weekend treat!
Now we need to get our hands on that COYO ice cream….
